Meet Cathie Hong, a stay-at-home mom, calligrapher, and Etsy shop owner, from Santa Clara, California. Cathie and her husband recently moved to the Bay Area with their 3-year-old son Oliver and 9-month-old girl Emelia. She spends most days at home with the kids but has a very creative side.

When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

I started Pinterest when it first started up and was invite-only, maybe four years ago or so? At the time I was blogging pretty regularly and heard about Pinterest through Victoria from sfgirlbybay. It seemed intriguing, so I joined up in a small blogging movement called “Pin It Forward” where we each made boards about what home was to us. I didn’t realize that it would become such a popular and globally-used bookmarking device.

Why do you like Pinterest?

I love Pinterest because it’s an easy and straightforward way to save all your bookmarks. I used to bookmark links on my desktop and it was impossible to find things again. Pinterest is so user-friendly and intuitive – I can’t believe no one thought of it before. It’s also a great way to find inspiration and new ideas/brands/recipes. I come across new things I love all the time. (more…)

Case Study: Swarovski A Crystal Clear Pinterest Strategy

Swarovski is an Austrian producer of luxury cut crystals. They sell jewelry, watches, accessories, and sparkling crystal objects, like small crystal animals. Swarovski’s Pinterest account has capitalized on the glamorous lifestyle, weddings and fashion. With 27 boards, over 7 thousand pins, and over 1.5 million Pinterest followers, Swarovski is obviously doing something right. Let’s look further into their Pinterest strategy to see exactly what they’re doing successfully in the world of Pinterest.

What Swarovski is doing right

On Pinterest, Swarovski does an amazing job at integrating products among beautiful non-brand related images. We usually recommend a 20/80 rule of 20% brand content and 80% other content interspersed at a rate of 1 brand pin for every 5 pins. By focusing on weddings in particular, Swarovski has reached a strong niche on Pinterest. Swarovski’s Wedded Bliss board is a great example of successfully incorporating product with inspiration. This wedding board shares inspiration around wedding decor, hair, cake design, DIYs, and photography among Swarovski products that seem to fit in naturally. (more…)

Common Brand Mistakes We See on Pinterest

1) Uploading images and not adding the products’ URLs.

We cringe a little when we see uploaded pins without the source URL attached – so much potential traffic missed out on! To edit your uploaded pins’ URLs, click on ‘edit’ and paste in the associated URL with the product. If the image has no associated product, at least paste in the general website or the Facebook page.

Common Brand Mistakes We See on Pinterest

When the bottom of pins say “Uploaded by:” or “via _(a name)_” it means there’s no URL attached.

2) Not categorizing your boards. (more…)

HelloInterview: Meet Anne Louise Teacher, Traveller, and Pinterest Influencer!

Meet Anne Louise, a teacher from Melbourne, Australia! She’s passionate about travel, teaching, learning, and loves museums. Anne shares that she currently lives by herself, which is something that she thought she would never do, but really loves it. “I don’t have any pets, but I do have an ever-increasing collection of houseplants.”

When she’s not teaching or pinning, Anne finds joy from studying and learning all that she can. “When I’m not studying, I feel a little lost, and almost don’t know what to do with my free time. I’m not really that bookish; I just have an appreciation for heritage and things with a history.”

Anne’s passion for beautiful photography, beautiful objects, beautiful spaces, and travel has earned her over 1.2 million Pinterest followers!

When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

I started using Pinterest quite early on, in 2010 I believe, when it was an invite-only site. At the time I had a (now long-defunct) blog called Anne Louise Likes and was studying Textile Design. Pinterest was a great source of inspiration for both endeavours.

Why do you like Pinterest?

Although I enjoy studying and writing, I am quite a visual person. I love art and design, I’m interested in fashion and photography, and I enjoy cooking. So for me, Pinterest is my first port of call when looking for ideas or inspiration, and is the perfect bookmarking tool. There are a lot of talented people who are doing and making amazing things; Pinterest is a wonderful way to stay informed and inspired.

Let’s face it outrageous scrunchies, choker necklaces, and butterfly clips are a few accessories we are happy to say have stayed in the 90’s.  However, this year we’ve seen a resurgence of 90’s fashion trends. Exposed midriffs, mixed prints, and high waist pants are the inspiration behind this year’s runways.  If you’ve searched deep into your parent’s closets for vintage fashion pieces, then you’ve probably been affected by this year’s top looks.  2014 has truly been a blast from the past in the fashion world, so we’ve gathered some pins of the trends that reflect this 90’s revival.

5 Reasons Why People Love Shopping On Pinterest

# 1: You can browse through every store ever, all at once.

Pinterest is amazing in that, if you’re looking at a fashion board, the women’s (or men’s) fashion category, or browsing search results, you can see a wide variety of brands, products, inspiring styles, and trends. Interested in finding a dress for summer? Search for “summer dress” and see a ton of dresses at different price points from many different brands and stores online.

Although some pins may not click through to the store that sells that dress, you can still pinpoint the look you’re going for and even print out the photo to show to an associate in store to find something similar!

# 2: You can easily see what looks are trending.

You can easily get a sense for current and upcoming trends and in-demand products and styles from Pinterest. See what fashion and product pins are popular. Those pins with hundreds to thousands of repins are most likely on trend and in demand.

# 3: You can see if an item is ‘In Stock,’ its price, and if it’s on sale. (more…)

HelloInterview: Meet Guillermo Álvarez Professional Photographer from Spain and Pinterest Influencer!Meet Guillermo Álvarez, a professional photographer from Gijón, a beautiful town in Northern Spain. Guillermo was born in La Habana, Cuba before moving to Spain and is now the father of a 9-year-old boy. When Guillermo’s not shooting photography or pinning, he can usually be found reading a book or listening to music – especially jazz, classical, and pop. Guillermo loves to go swimming every day and is always moving. He rides his bike into town often. Guillermo’s passion for photography, interiors, and design has earned him over 3.9 million Pinterest followers!

When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

The first thing I do every day, early in the morning, is have a coffee and read the newspaper. One day in 2010 I read about Pinterest in the Internet section of the newspaper. I found it very interesting because I love images. As soon as I came to my studio I asked for an invitation to pin. At the time it was still in beta and as soon as I got accepted I started to pin.

Why do you like Pinterest?

I love Pinterest more than Facebook or the other social platforms. I love Pinterest because I can find a lot of images that interest me, like portraits of famous photographers and images of interiors that I love. Before Pinterest, I used to collect those images in my computer, but it was really difficult to find them and keep them organized. Pinterest gives you the opportunity to find them very easily.

You have gained over 3.9M followers! That’s so great! What makes your Pinterest unique? (more…)
