When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

I don’t really remember when I started using Pinterest, it was pretty early on in 2010 or 2011 because it was still at the time when you needed to submit a request for an invitation. I think at that time it was mostly creatives — designers, architects, etc — that were using it and that’s why I initially signed up for an account. I used it to look for inspiration for design projects, it was way easier than keeping folders of images on my computer or keeping shelves of design magazines in the studio. (more…)

HS Friendsgiving Title
Are you throwing a Friendsgiving this year? Are you familiar with what a Friendsgiving is? Well, it’s pretty self explanatory. It’s a get together between friends celebrating Thanksgiving together, either on Thanksgiving or a little before. Typically it’s a potluck where each friend attending brings a dish or two and a bottle of wine or another beverage. This is usually accompanied with games, DIYs, festive decor, and the realization that you are truly thankful for your amazing best friends.

The following guide shares steps on making your Friendsgiving this year one to remember, all thanks to inspiration from Pinterest.

Meet Pinterest influencer Kristen Gage from San Jose, California! She’s originally from Southern Arizona, moved to Texas after high school graduation, and landed in San Francisco for college. During college Kristen discovered her passion for yoga and now teaches it as her primary job. She currently lives with her boyfriend and their 12 lb. Dachshund Lexi. Her hobbies include anything involving being outside, trying new restaurants around town, and taking Lexi to the beach.

When Kristen isn’t pinning or teaching yoga she can usually be found hanging out with girlfriends at a local downtown eatery. Her passion for yoga, fashion, photography, food, and art has earned her over 674k Pinterest followers!

When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

I believe I started using Pinterest in 2011. A friend of mine was raving about this new website and how I needed to get on it. This was when you had to request a special invitation to start collecting pins. I became addicted and have not looked back. I have convinced many friends to create accounts.

Why do you like Pinterest?

I love Pinterest because it speaks to a person’s creativity. You don’t have to be artistic to have a creative board. Anyone can make a board that is personal to them, share that with others, and come to find that millions of people have similar tastes. Pinterest is a great outlet for business owners and for people that are just needing some retail therapy. I enjoy the fact that if I’m needing inspiration for dinner and dessert or what to wear to a cardio workout I teach, I can always rely on Pinterest.

You have gained over 674k Pinterest followers! That is so cool! What makes your Pinterest unique? (more…)

Meet HelloSociety Pinterest influencer Anne Reczka, a behavioral therapist from Calgary, Alberta! She did her schooling in Calgary where she studied psychology and sociology at Mt. Royal University and now works with junior and senior high school youths with autism. She’s not a huge fan of the cold weather in Calgary (down to -40 degrees Celsius!) but her “family, friends, and boyfriend definitely make it worth staying.” In the summers she’s able to enjoy warmer weather. Anne’s mom is from Italy and her parents have an olive farm in Tuscany, Italy where she spends most of her summers.

Anne’s hobbies and interests include travel, cooking, yoga, fashion, and spending time with her dog Georgie, friends, or family. “Calgary is great because it’s so close to the beautiful rocky mountains so I try and take advantage of that whenever possible.” She also loves trying out new restaurants and food trucks. Watching Hockey is another one of her favorite things to do with friends. “Go Flames!” Anne’s passion for style, home decor, and cooking has earned her over 674k Pinterest followers!

When did you start using Pinterest and what inspired you to make an account?

I can’t remember exactly when I signed up for Pinterest, but it was probably around 3 or 4 years ago. A few of my friends who already had accounts introduced me to Pinterest and I was really excited to start, as I love looking at fashion blogs and I was constantly saving photos on to my computer. Pinterest was a great way for me to organize and categorize these photos (and free up some much needed space on my hard drive).

Why do you like Pinterest?

I love Pinterest because it’s a way for me to curate my own online magazine with everything I love and want to save for later. I like that I can see an outfit, pin it and know I can reference it later on a day I’m feeling uninspired or struggling to find something to wear. Pinterest helps me create the best version of my personal style and I hope I can do that for my followers as well! I also love all the recipes! I cook a lot and I love knowing I can search for a recipe and quickly and easily find what I’m looking for or find new recipes to try. (more…)

6 misconceptions pinterest.jpg

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 10.21.39 AM.png

- This is something I see a lot of brands doing. They don’t have a lot of images besides product shots so they upload a ton of Instagram images hoping they’ll perform well. Although sometimes Instagram images do fine, I never support more than a few here and there. The square sizing doesn’t show up as large as it could and needs to be optimized. If image is too blurry – don’t bother.

- How to optimize? Simply crop to be more vertical (narrow) and test pin to make sure it shows up clearly when clicked.

Screen Shot 2014-11-04 at 10.22.22 AM.png

- No, it’s best to stick to 20-25% brand images or 1 out of every 4 or 5 pins (also known as the 20/80 rule). Too many branded images leads to loss of followers. I usually aim to pin in a constant rotation of categories to keep it fresh (although with the new Smart Feed this is a little less important). Pin a recipe, then a beauty tip, then a photo of a beautiful beach, then your product, then a DIY, then a home decor idea, etc…

- By sharing branded images next to beautiful, inspirational imagery, it sets the scene and helps promote sales and higher engagement. Looking for an example? Check out Madewell’s paris / j’adore board. A poor example is the Kohl’s board below.

Kohls Shot.jpg

Kohls’ Falling for Autumn board is trying to incorporate products and inspirational images, but needs to follow the 20/80 rule! They’re doing more of an 80/20 rule. (more…)
